Passive Voice

Active: Peter builds a house

Passive: A house is built by Peter.

What are the difference between the two sentences?

Consider the subject and the verb

Active: Peter builds a house

A house is built by Peter.

the passive voice sentence the subject is not “doing” the action of the verb (like in the active voice sentence).

Passive voice is used when the focus is on the action. It is not important or not known, however, who or what is performing the action

Form of the passive voice:

Subject + finite form of to be + Past Participle Example: A letter was written.

When rewriting active sentences in passive voice, note the following:

  • the object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence
  • the finite form of the verb is changed (to be+ past participle)
  • the subject of the active sentence becomes the object of the passive sentence (or is dropped)

Examples of Passive

Tense Subject Verb Object
Simple Present Active: Rita writes a letter.
Passive: A letter is written by Rita.
Simple Past Active: Rita wrote a letter.
Passive: A letter was written by Rita.

When do we use passive voice?

In some sentences, passive voice can be perfectly acceptable. You might use it in the following cases:

  • The actor is unknown:
The cave paintings of Lascaux were made in the Upper Old Stone Age. [We don’t know who made them.]
  • The actor is irrelevant:
An experimental solar power plant will be built in the Australian desert. [We are not interested in who is building it.]
  • You want to be vague about who is responsible:
Mistakes were made. [Common in bureaucratic writing!]
  • You are talking about a general truth:
Rules are made to be broken. [By whomever, whenever.]
  • You want to emphasize the person or thing acted on. For example, it may be your main topic:
Insulin was first discovered in 1921 . (http://www.writing.utoronto.ca/advice/style-and-editing/passive-voice
    • The passive is used frequently. We are interested in the passive, not who uses it.
    • The house was built in 1654: We are interested in the house, not the builder.
    • The road was repaired last week: We are interested in the road, not the people repairing it.

Active or Passive?

1 I ate a piece of chocolate cake.
2 The librarian read the book to the students.
3 The money was stolen.
4 They are paid on Fridays.
5 The movie is being made in Hollywood.
6 I washed my car three weeks ago.
7 His hair was cut by a professional.
8 I will introduce you to my boss this week.
9 It would have been fixed on the weekend.
10 The national anthem is being sung by Jason this time.

Complete.

Changing active sentences to passive voice

  • In the active voice, the subject of the sentence DOES the action:

  • In the passive voice, the subject of the sentence RECEIVESthe action.
  • The house was painted last week. Subject / verb

November 11/12th: Predicting the Future

Grammar: The Future

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d68yRIE9OvQ
The Future:

What do you think the future will look like in 2015? How will it be different to what the film predicts?

Back to the Future II (1989) predicts the future in 2015 – 26 years ahead of their time. How would you shoot a scene describing the daily life in  Colombia 2040? Justify your reasons for future predictions.

What other famous films predict the future? Are any of them on course to be correct?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1BQPV-iCkU

The clip from Pixars Wall E paints a disconcerting picture of the human race 2110. Do you think similar changes will happen to the human race? Consider the issues of obesity and reliance on technology.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRdxXPV9GNQ

In James Cameron’s recent film Avatar, humans find a habitable planet called Pandora. Consider space and extra terrestrial life- Is there a possibility that the human race will relocate planets? Consider the use of science in the trailer – there have been successful experiments in cloning, but will we be able to use ‘avatars’ in the future?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4Jo8QoOTQ4

In the terminator (1984) an advance robot from the forty years into future (2024) comes to terminate Sarah Connor. It predicts a future run by machines. Deliberate the likelihood of this event. The recent 2004 film I-Robot anticipates a similar battle between robots and humans: Will machines be something to fear in the future?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZppWok6SX88

In the not too distant future, Gattaca predicts that DNA will define everything about our lives. Will genetics and scientific modification shape a persons life? To what extent do they do so already? Consider beautification advancements, and disadvantages of physical disabilities.
